Senior Director/Director, Preclinical Research

The Senior Director/Director, Preclinical Research, will play an important role in shaping the discovery research and development strategy and in expanding the therapeutic scope of PepGen´s proprietary enhanced delivery oligonucleotides (EDOs).  In addition to providing leadership and guidance to the drug discovery teams at PepGen, the Senior Director, Preclinical Development will work with other functional leads at PepGen to discover and develop first-in-class and best-in-class EDO therapies for neuromuscular diseases and as well as other genetic diseases with profound medical need.

The successful candidate will work closely with the SVPs of Discovery and Chemistry/CMC to design and implement PepGen’s research strategy.  Importantly, the Senior Director, Preclinical Research, will be a key member of cross functional teams with a mission to build and support preclinical drug discovery and development programs all the way from concept through to IND submission.


  • Work closely with leaders across the company to plan and execute the R&D strategy, evaluate new target opportunities, and initiate additional pipeline programs
  • Manage a portfolio of targets, oversee strategic execution of drug discovery research and preclinical activities to enable robust, timely and compliant IND submissions with clear development paths
  • Support evaluation of in-/out-licensing opportunities
  • Provide support to PepGen’s intellectual property strategy and patent portfolio
  • Engage with external partners, clinical and academic collaborators and CROs
  • Lead, manage, develop, and retain a high-performance team focused on developing new class of therapeutics. Provide development opportunities and mentoring to the team
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, discovery, and cutting-edge research culture focused on scientific excellence, open communication, and continual improvement


  • PhD in Chemistry, Pharmacology, Biology, Biochemistry, Toxicology, or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in a drug discovery setting (biotech or large pharma)
  • Experience leading drug discovery project teams from target validation to IND-enabling studies
  • Track record of excellence and innovation as demonstrated by multiple peer reviewed publications and co-inventorship on patents
  • Extensive knowledge in all disciplines relevant to oligonucleotide drug discovery
  • Working knowledge of and participation in CMC-related activities
  • Understanding of the current competitive and regulatory landscape for oligonucleotide therapeutics
  • Understanding of the current competitive and regulatory landscape for neuromuscular and serious genetic disorders
  • Understanding of the current competitive landscape for neuromuscular and serious genetic disorders
  • Experience in managing a portfolio of research and development projects across multiple therapeutic areas
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills with an enthusiasm for participating in a fast-paced environment characterized by rigorous science and innovative thinking
  • Familiarity with engaging and managing external efforts with contract research organizations and academic collaborators
  • Comfortable in a results-driven, highly accountable environment where you can make a clear impact
  • Experience and demonstrated success in recruiting, building, managing, and developing a team of high-performing, multi-disciplinary scientists across multiple levels
